Even those who are not dental specialists agree that a great smile makes anybody look brighter, more handsome, prettier, and generally healthier. Unfortunately, poor dental hygiene might make it uncomfortable for you to flaunt your smile. Some individuals might be uninformed about the best dental hygiene measures, whereas others care for their teeth incorrectly. Pearland general and cosmetic dentistry comes in to help such individuals properly care for their teeth and gums through regular checkups and cleanings. However, there are many ways you can maintain white, healthy teeth and gums in between these dentist visits. Continue reading to learn more.

    1. Brush at Least Twice Daily

Proper dental hygiene starts with brushing your teeth twice daily. Brushing eliminates food practices that bacteria may convert into acids from the mouth. Moreover, brushing eliminates acids and bacteria in the mouth.

Dental specialists suggest brushing twice daily to provide their teeth sufficient time to recover from these constant attacks. The best time to brush is immediately before retiring to bed. Brushing at these times eliminates acids and bacteria accumulated on your teeth all day. Moreover, saliva production reduces during sleep, making teeth more susceptible to attacks. Every brushing session should last for not less than two minutes.

    2. Floss Daily

When brushing your teeth, you should not forget to floss. Flossing cleans the hard-to-reach areas between teeth that you cannot clean with your toothbrush. These spaces can house plaque and bacteria that builds up and begins eating away at your teeth; thus, you should have them cleaned at least once every day.

    3. Utilize Mouthwash

Mouthwash cleans the places where flossing and brushing fail to reach. Antibacterial mouthwash destroys oral bacteria; thereby reducing the oral acids. Moreover, some mouthwashes contain fluoride that helps remineralize teeth.

    4. Reduce Sugar Consumption

Any sugary substance is bad for your teeth because sugar is acidic and oral bacteria may convert it to other acids. Even foods that are not particularly sweet, such as rice, have enough sugars to promote tooth decay. For this reason, ensure you rinse your mouth with water after eating anything that contains sugar to reduce its effect on your teeth.

    5. Avoid Tobacco Use

The effects of tobacco on lung health are well-recognized, but many do not often consider the effects it can have on your teeth. Occasional or regular tobacco use may permanently stain your teeth, and even erode your teeth’ enamel. While these effects are not immediately noticeable, you will notice them with time. To avoid teeth staining or discoloration from tobacco use, it is important to avoid using it altogether.

    6. Wear Protective Gear

Individuals participating in contact sports like American football, rugby, boxing, and more are likely to sustain mouth injuries. These mouth injuries are responsible for common dental concerns like chipping, cracked, or even missing teeth. Wear a mouthguard when training or engaging in such sports to protect yourself from oral injuries.

Beautiful smiles start with healthy gums and teeth, so the significance of dental hygiene cannot be understated. However, attaining a healthy, attractive smile is not a guessing game. Integrate the tips highlighted above into your everyday routine, and you will start noticing results in a few days or weeks. Nevertheless, some oral health issues like cavities, tooth decay, and bleeding gums might still develop despite your best efforts. If you need specialist help, see your dentist to assess your concerns and recommend the best cosmetic and general dentistry solutions for you.
